Alban and Saxum are both on my "to drink" list, must move them up the queue based on your comments.

So glad you enjoyed the La-La Sasha. Guigal does many things (actually everything I can think of wine-wise) right, and one big piece of the quality puzzle is extended barrel-aging. Fortunately, some of the better American syrah producers, like Alban and Saxum, are starting to do this. And decanting is so important to getting the most enjoyment from a great wine, and not just for young wines or red wines or even still wines.

Thanks -- I'm not so good at the patience thing, so this was hard. Prefacing it with an extended champagne/cocktail hour definitely helped.

Good for you. Hard to argue with the work the Guigals do. Other than wishing I had a glassful, your post reminds me that I'm horrible at letting wines get the air that they sometimes so desperately need. I have some really nice decanters that don't see much service. If it had been me, I would have been done with the wine before it truly became, as you wrote, itself. A wine 101 lesson nicely reiterated.
