[...] It’s a wine writing cliché to compare the style of a wine to the character of the person who made it. But in the case of Smith-Madrone, it’s true. Like his wines, winemaker Stu Smith is a Northern California original — direct, approachable, down-to-earth, and, yes, a real straight-shooter. (This is a much more interesting photo than the usual staged “winemaker lovingly cradling a bunch of grapes shot” don’t you think?) Here are some highlights from our recent conversation, after I had a chance to taste some of their recent releases. [...]

Full on Grizzly Adams! Yes, it's great stuff all and you owe yourself a try. $45 is certainly not cheap, but I do think it's a good value for the quality of the wine. They re-release their older Rieslings to encourage drinking it with some age on it, but I'd recommend snapping up some of the 2008 now, hanging on to it for a few years and "re-releasing" it to yourself anytime from 2012 on. Will post the interview later this week/weekend, I'm hoping, if I shake this darn cold...

I've heard and read soooo many good things about Smith-Madrone wines! In the restaurant where I worked a couple years ago, we had one the Smith-Madrone Cabs, which we were told to decant for an hour before serving by our manager -- big stuff, that! Then I read Jay McInerney's description of meeting the brothers and drinking their most excellent wine, and the Grizzly Adams comparisons, etc., and how beautiful the area is in Cali where the wines are made. Everything I read about the producers and the wine itself makes me know I'm gonna have to put some of those wines on MY dream list!
